BNP Paribas AM touts Asian CB market

The low interest rate environment and equity downside have deterred convertible bond (CB) issuance in recent years, despite European investors retaining a fairly strong appetite for Asian CBs as they search for better risk-adjusted returns, says BNP Paribas Asset Management.

Standard Chartered Bank’s launch of an integrated regional core custody and clearing platform for its investor and intermediary clients on September 17 marked the latest step in a major regional custody expansion project that has seen the firm double the number of markets covered in its custody universe.

Many of Asia’s government-run pension plans and sovereign wealth funds are ill-equipped to navigate the financial markets in their current form, says one industry veteran, due to the additional levels of bureaucracy that have been put in place as they try to tackle an array of problems, not least of which is media risk.

The number of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in the Asia Pacific has increased by 1.6% year on year, to reach 3.37 million, surpassing North American for the first time, according to a report released by RBC Wealth Management and Capgemini on September 19. The growth rate is double the global growth rate for 2011.

Taiwan’s Labor Insurance Fund (LIF) announced on September 25 that foreign fixed income and equities managers PIMCO, Alliance Bernstein, and Wellington, all with pension funds mandated in November 2009, saw accumulated pension profits rise to US$434 million, for a gain of 24.12%, as of end-August.
