Bobbing around for 25 years as ASEAN shapes up

I left Europe for Hong Kong in 1987. In those days Europe was far from its current integrated self. Scores of currencies kept streets of change-peddlers in business, and at eye-watering spreads as well; in fact a cousin of mine worked at Brown Shipley Merchant Bank, one of whose core lines of business was the ‘sweeping’ and clearing of millions of pockets of holiday change at the end of summer. Disjointed in other ways too – remember gunboat diplomacy over fishing territory? And the notion of weekends in other cities was just too exotic for all but a tiny few.
