China-Taiwan political negotiations enter a crucial and uncertain phase

The Lunar Year of the Horse got off to a galloping start for Taiwan’s relations with China. For the first time in 65 years, China’s communist regime received a minister-level delegation from Taipei. Until then cross-strait dealings had been informal and unofficial. Expectations rose high on Taiwan last month, but within days the Kuomintang (KMT) authorities in the island nation realised that the celestial horse would have to go back to its slow trot.
