Xiao Gang, chairman of Bank of China (BOC), is set to succeed Guo Shuqing as head of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), according to a report from the China Securities Journal today (March 18).

Speculation about the move has been rife since BOC Hong Kong (Holdings), an affiliate of BOC, announced on March 17 that Mr. Xiao was to resign as chairman and non-executive director of the company and its principal operating subsidiary, Bank of China (Hong Kong), effective March 17. Mr. Xiao has been chairman of BOC since August 2004.

In addition, Chinese media is circulating rumours that Mr. Guo is to be installed as the next governor of Shandong province.
