Coutts, the wealth division of Royal Bank of Scotland Group, has appointed Mark McFarland as executive director and global chief economist. In this newly created role, he will be based in Hong Kong and will be responsible for the global leadership of the firm’s economic views.
Mr. McFarland will work closely with Coutts’ three chief investment officers – Alan Higgins covering the UK; Gary Dugan for Asia and the Middle East; and Norman Villamin for Europe – to determine asset class views. He will report to Gayle Schumacher, managing director and head of investment office and will also report locally to Mr. Dugan.
Mr. McFarland has more than 15 years’ global markets experience in London, Hong Kong and Dubai. He has worked at Emirates NBD since 2010 where he was chief investment strategist and head of the wealth management investment strategy unit. Prior to this, he held a number of chief economist roles in Asia with Santander and Swiss Re. More recently, Mr. McFarland worked for NAEEM, managing macro research at a Dubai-based hedge fund.
Ms. Schumacher said: “I am delighted to welcome Mark to Coutts as we continue to invest in expertise to support our clients. Mark’s appointment will further build on the strength of our investment proposition and allow us to be both truly global and connected in our investment approach. His broad knowledge and insight will be integral to providing our clients with an investment offering that caters to their evolving needs.”
