Speaking today (March 22) at Asia Asset Management and ETFI Asia’s second ETF Roundtable event to be held in China, Robert J Hughes, vice president, global head – index services, NASDAQ OMX Global Indexes, emphasised the importance of investor education on a global basis in regard to exchange traded funds (ETFs) and indexes.

On prospects for the future, he said: “It’s all about education as more and more retail investors and institutional investors will be using ETFs for their investment needs.”

The theme for the day at the Shenzhen event was ‘Institutional ETF Investment Challenges: Entering a New Era’. Identifying education as a key challenge, Mr. Hughes went on to say: “It doesn’t matter whether you’re in the US, Europe or China – it’s all going to be about investor education.”

He continued: “As market participants and stakeholders in the global ETF market, we have to make sure we are playing our part when it comes to investor education. That’s why NASDAQ will carry on showing up at events such as this and continue to put out webinars and reach out to investment advisors – to ensure that everybody has all the information that they need to make smart investment choices when it comes to the structure of the ETF itself.”

Mr. Hughes finished off on the theme by saying: “We’ve spent plenty of time working with investors, the advisors and the regulators on education and we think that’s always the message we would like to perpetuate in the industry.”

Mr. Hughes is responsible for managing and developing the NASDAQ Global Index business across the index licensing, benchmarking and custom calculation segments. During his presentation he also described how he works with his team in the US, Europe and Asia to devise strategies and create business opportunities for current and prospective NASDAQ OMX clients.
