Bank J. Safra Sarasin brings in new chief economist

Bank J. Safra Sarasin has appointed Dr. Karsten Junius as chief economist with effect from April 1. He joins from the International Monetary Fund where he was a principal economist. In his new role Dr. Junius will head the economic research team at the Swiss private bank.

Philipp E Bärtschi, chief investment officer private clients, said: “We are delighted to appoint such an experienced economist as chief economist and head economic research. With his long-standing expertise in both developed and emerging markets he will bring new ideas and insights to the research department which will be very valuable for our clients.

Dr. Junius will take over the chief economist role from Dr. Jan A Poser who will concentrate fully on his position as head asset management at Bank J. Safra Sarasin.

Dr. Poser said: “I have known Karsten for more than 20 years and am sure that he has all the right credentials to succeed me as chief economist. With his pointed and non-consensus views he will add great value to our investment process and the profile of Bank J Safra Sarasin in the financial markets.”

At the end of December 2013, the J. Safra Sarasin Group was managing total client assets of over 131 billion Swiss francs (US$147.73 billion) and had stockholder equity of 3.5 billion francs.
