US asset manager Capital Group has hired Toby Chan from Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for a newly created role as head of its Hong Kong client group.

She will be responsible for distribution strategy for intermediary and institutional clients in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, Capital says in a statement on October 11, when the appointment became effective. It’s still subject to regulatory approvals.

The company says it is expanding its products and services to cater to the needs of clients in the Greater Bay Area. The area, which comprises Hong Kong, Macau, and nine cities in China’s southern Guangdong province, has a total population holding roughly 3 trillion RMB (US$462 billion) of investable assets.

Chan, who previously managed HSBC’s high-net-worth client business, reports to Grant Leon, Capital’s managing director of financial intermediaries for Europe and Asia.

Los Angeles-based Capital Group has US$2.6 trillion of assets under management currently.
