Indonesian sovereign wealth fund Danantara is purchasing land in Saudi Arabia to build a village for haj pilgrims.
Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, chief executive officer of the wealth fund, told a media briefing in Jakarta on July 30 that the Saudi government has offered several plots of land in Mecca ranging from 25 hectares to over 80 hectares for the project.
He said the lands are in close proximity to Masjidil Haram, Islam’s holiest mosque, and that the Indonesian government has to submit a design for the village infrastructure by October.
It’s not clear whether the village is only for Indonesian pilgrims.
According to Roeslani, the Saudi government will revise land ownership laws to allow foreign countries to purchase land in Saudi Arabia.
