South Korea’s Teachers’ Pension has tapped Baek Joo-Hyun from the Government Employees Pension Service (GEPS) as its new chief investment officer, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The person says Baek, who was CIO of GEPS, was one of five candidates shortlisted for the role and was chosen on July 8 after multiple rounds of interviews.
He succeeds Jun Beomsik, who left Teachers’ Pension in January to become CIO of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives.
It’s unclear when Baek is scheduled to start at Teachers’ Pension. Spokespersons for the pension fund did not immediately respond to questions from Asia Asset Management.
Baek joined GEPS in 2022 as CIO from Samsung Life Insurance, where he worked for over ten years in various roles.
Teachers’ Pension had 33 trillion won (US$21.86 billion) of assets under management as of end-2025.
