Thailand’s Social Security Fund (SSF) is being called out for spending more than 800 million baht (US$25.74 million) on a now abandoned university complex and a canteen at the labour ministry.
The labour ministry oversees the Social Security Office, which manages the SSF. Private sector employees contribute to the SSF, which managed 2.3 trillion baht of assets as of end-2025.
According to former lawmaker Rukchanok Srinork, the SSF spent 12 million baht to renovate the canteen and invested 800 million baht in the university complex.
“Every baht in the SSF comes from deductions from workers’ wages each month. This money is meant to provide lifelong security. It belongs to the insured, not the Social Security Office,” Rukchanok, who is running for election to the House of Representatives at next month’s general election, writes in her Facebook account on January 26.
The SSF responded that the canteen renovation was approved “through all required procedures”.
“These included endorsement by the Social Security Committee, budgetary and auditing agencies and the Treasury Department,” the SSF says in a posting on its official Facebook account.
It did not address the investment in the university complex.
