State Street has named Goh Thean Eu, a senior finance writer at Asia Asset Management (AAM), as Journalist of the Year – Pensions in the English language category of the State Street Institutional Press Awards Asia Pacific 2023.

Goh won for his article headlined “A bleak pension picture” published in the March issue of the magazine. The article delves into Malaysia’s pension landscape after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim proposed a scheme allowing members of the nation’s largest pension fund, the Employees Provident Fund, to take out bank loans using their retirement savings as collateral.

According to State Street, the award panel reviewed hundreds of nominations from six Asia Pacific countries vying in nine categories for English language entries, and five categories for Chinese entries.

Each category in both languages honoured three journalists: a winner, and two who were “highly commended”. The winning articles were chosen based on their style, content, accuracy and timeliness.

“Congratulations to the award winners and the highly commended journalists for their quality and professional work over the course of this year,” Mostapha Tahiri, chief executive officer for Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa at State Street, says in a statement on November 28.

Entries were judged by an independent panel of seven industry professionals led by William Mellor, an independent writer and producer and former senior writer and Asia correspondent for Bloomberg News.

“The sheer volume of entries combined with their outstanding quality testify to the enduring enthusiasm for these press awards and the recognition they represent for journalists in the region. For the judges, picking winners from such a talented field was both challenging and stimulating,” Mellor says.

“We are delighted to be recognised for our reporting on key pension issues in the region and we thank the judging panel and State Street,” says Tan Lee Hock, founder and publisher of AAM, which celebrates its 28th anniversary this year.
