Aberdeen Investments has hired John McCareins from Northern Trust Asset Management as its new chief client officer.
McCareins, who will start work in June, will also sit on Aberdeen’s group executive leadership team. He succeeds Xavier Meyer, who has been promoted to chief executive officer of Aberdeen Investments, the company says in a statement on April 1.
McCareins will be based at Aberdeen’s London office in this global role.
McCareins was most recently the executive vice president and head of international at Northern Trust Asset Management.
He joined Northern Trust Asset Management in 2005 as senior vice president and senior investment programme manager. His other roles in the company include executive vice president, managing executive and head of Asia Pacific, senior vice president and practice lead for multi-manager solutions group.
Before Northern Trust, he was vice president and product manager at T. Rowe Price from 2002 to 2005.
McCareins, who began his career at Northern Trust as an officer and client manager in 1998, is passionate about mentoring young people from underprivileged backgrounds and is a mentor and career coach for several initiatives, including Black Women in Asset Management.
Xavier Meyer, chief executive officer of Aberdeen Investments, says McCareins is a “perfect fit” to accelerate the company’s growth momentum.

As at December 31, 2024, Aberdeen Investments managed and administered £511 billion (US$660 billion) of assets.
