Hong Kong insurer AIA Group has hired Leo Grepin from Canadian rival Sun Life Financial Inc. as regional chief executive and group chief strategy officer.
He succeeds Mark Saunders, who is stepping down on December 31 ahead of his retirement in March. Grepin’s appointment is effective January 3.
He will be responsible for businesses in Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, and also lead AIA’s strategy and corporate development functions, the company says in a statement on December 1.
He will report to Lee Yuan Siong, the group chief executive and president.
Grepin is currently Asia president at Sun Life, and was department head of account management at US hedge fund manager Bridgewater Associates before that.
“Leo brings a wealth of strategic experience and expertise across disciplines in the insurance and financial services industry and we are delighted to welcome him to AIA,” Lee says in the statement.
AIA had total assets of US$330 billion as of June 2021.
